Apixaban 2.5mg
ALIQA (apixaban) is a potent, oral, reversible, direct and highly selective active site inhibitor of
Factor-Xa.
It inhibits free and clot-bound Factor-Xa, and prothrombinase activity.
Has no direct effects on platelet aggregation, but indirectly inhibits platelet aggregation induced by
thrombin.
By inhibiting Factor-Xa, Aliqa prevents thrombin generation and thrombus development.
Description
Apixaban twice/day dosing produces stable blood levels compared to Rivaroxaban given
once daily that leads to blood level fluctuations with higher highs at which bleeding risk is
increased and lower lows at which the stroke prevention is less than desired.
In patients with atrial fibrillation for whom vitamin K antagonist therapy was unsuitable,
apixaban reduced the risk of stroke or systemic embolism without significantly increasing
the risk of major bleeding or intracranial hemorrhage. (Averroes trial)
In patients with atrial fibrillation, apixaban was superior to warfarin in preventing stroke or
systemic embolism, caused less bleeding, and resulted in lower mortality. (Aristotle Clinical Trials)
